Pacific Buddhist Academy - Oahu, HI

MIGM visited the Hongwanji School located on Oahu, HI. ThePacific Buddhist Academy is part of the Hongwanji Mission which practices Shin Buddism. Shin Buddhim was founded by Shinran Shonin over 750 years ago. Jake has some recent experience with the Hongwanji when they celebrated the 750th anniversary of Shinran Shonin's passing. Jake wrote a song just for that celebration called "Annon".

The students in attendance were a mix of eighth grade students to seniors in high school, about 80 students in all. The setting for this school is very unique since it's located on the same grounds as the temple. Upon entering the building you immediately smell pleasant incense and are greeted by the humble employees. There are buddhist relics and religious icons setup all over the grounds. Outside the temple is a life-size statue of Shinran Shonin.

During the visit Jake spoke about the different sounds that you can achieve with the ukulele and how important it is to experience the various styles and genres of music. He explained how music always tends to tell a story and has a certain form to it - which is often depicted from the artist who wrote the music.

One example Jake used to describe this was his experience with Ziggy Marley. Jake explained how Ziggy Marley has the ability to pick up any instrument and the way he plays the instrument just makes you feel a reggae vibe. A deeper message portrayed was that music is not just picking up an instrument and playing, its a way of life. Its important that we feel like we are experiencing the life and culture of the musical roots.

Towards the end Jake played the lovely song Annon; which figuratively translates to "let peace and tranquility prevail throughout the world." The students seemed to be very moved and enjoyed all of Jake's advice and deep spiritual relations. Afterwards all the students and some faculty joined for a large group picture on the steps of the temple.

A big Mahalo to the staff, students, and Shinran Shonin for making this visit such an exceptional and meaningful experience.
