Kuakini Health System Senior Care Home - Oahu, HI
To kick off the new year, MIGM headed over to the Kuakini Health System Senior Care Home where Jake would share an afternoon with the senior patients and care center staff. Since this was a kickoff to the new year, Jake would be joined with other performers to celebrate the various cultures and musical talents Hawaii has to offer.
The event started off with a very interesting traditional Japanese dance. A lady dressed in traditional Japanese Kimono did a dance called "Nihon Buyo". Following this dance, three young Japanese girls took the stage, also dressed in traditional Kimono's, and did a different rendition of the "Nihon Buyo". The colors of their dresses and elegant movements really brought a fun youthful excitement to the stage.
After the Japanese dancers wowed the crowd of all senior citizens, a group of Break Dancers took the stage and impressed everyone with their sleek moves and arial contortions. I was quite amazing to see! Just before Jake went on stage the patients were treated to a warm and welcoming performance by Hula Dancers. Joined with Guitar and dressed in bright and colorful Mumu's, their graceful presence made a big connection with everyone in attendance.
To finish off the event, Jake would take the stage to play a few songs and speak about his passion for music. He played a series of original and cover tunes including one request, which was, to play "In My Life" which Jake performed with Bette Midler for the Queen of England. One of the crowds favorite tunes was definitely Sakura Sakura...the traditional Japanese folk tune where Jake mimics a thirteen-string koto. You could just about hear a pin drop while Jake was playing.
This was a very beautiful and culture rich event and we hope that all the senior patients of Kuakini Health Care enjoyed their afternoon. Many thanks to all the staff and other entertainers that joined in the show. MIGM would like to wish everyone a fun, healthy and prosperous 2010!
